Website University of Turku, Department of Computing

The Data Analytics unit at the Department of Computing has open positions for 1-8 research assistants in summer 2024 in all of its research groups. As a research assistant you will contribute to ongoing research projects based on tasks related to data analysis, machine learning, AI, and scientific programming. We develop methods in modern data science and machine learning, with applications in diverse fields ranging from life sciences to language technology, social sciences, and computational humanities. The selected research assistants will be assigned to different research projects in the group based on their qualifications and interests, and the needs of the projects. Summer projects are available under the following themes:

  1. Natural Language Processing (NLP)

You will work on tasks that can range from corpus preparation and language data annotation, to deep neural network applications and their training on supercomputers. The exact task will depend on your skills and personal interests. From the internship, you will gain better understanding of NLP as a field of AI and practical skills in language data processing. Prior knowledge of Python is a requirement. Experience with PyTorch and attendance of at least some of the NLP courses offered by the department is a plus.

  1. Data science

You will contribute to ongoing research projects on statistical and probabilistic programming and their applications in the analysis of complex natural and social systems. The main application areas of the team include human microbiome research, population cohort studies, and computational analysis of cultural production. Programming experience with R or Julia is a benefit. More: https://datascience.utu.fi | Leo Lahti leo.lahti@utu.fi

  1. Data analytics and machine learning

Work related to machine learning based classification and regression tasks. Main research directions are also measuring the prediction performance of artificial intelligence and machine learning methods, prediction of interaction strength between pairs, e.g. between drugs and their targets or clients of an Internet store and products, as well as privacy preserving machine learning for sensitive health data. More: Tapio Pahikkala aatapa@utu.fi

In addition to the topics mentioned above, you have also possibility to work on machine learning based data/sensor fusion applied to autonomous systems ( e.g. land robots) and GIS applications. More: Jukka Heikkonen jukhei@utu.fi

The work done as a research assistant can serve as a basis for a MSc thesis topic.

The work requires previous programming experience and documentation skills. Additional knowledge in computational fields is an asset.
