Who we are

Medical bioinformatics Centre (MBC) of University of Turku is part of the national Biocenter Finland research infrastructure and the European-wide ELIXIR infrastructure. We conduct internationally high-level research in the fields of bioinformatics and computational medicine. We develop and apply computational data analysis tools for interpreting large molecular and clinical datasets in medical research, in close collaboration with leading medical research groups and biobanks. As a core facility of Turku Bioscience Centre, we also support high-quality research by providing bioinformatics support to academic research units and healthcare organizations, among others, and scientific IT support to researchers.

Job description

The MBC core facility offers support for analyzing data generated by modern biotechnologies. We are looking for an expert in information technology to join our team and take responsibility of the development of scientific IT support services targeted for life science researchers across Finland. The position is part of the national Biocenter Finland infrastructure, aiming to enhance efficient utilization of the IT infrastructures and resources provided by CSC, ELIXIR, and the Biocenter Finland host universities. Key tasks include providing expert support, developing support operations in collaboration with the  staff and stakeholders, as well as coordination and communication with the collaborators and networks. Additionally, the position involves preparation of funding applications, reporting, and participation in the organization of training events.

Who we are looking for

Applicants are required to have experience in maintaining and working with HPC environments or cloud computing platforms, and experience with job schedulers (e.g. SLURM). Applicants should have experience in Linux system administration (e.g. RHEL, AlmaLinux) and proficiency in shell scripting and automation tools (e.g. Ansible). Applicants need to have strong programming skills (e.g., C++, R, Python), and the ability to work with version control tools (e.g., Git). Additionally, familiarity with best practices for data management and storing high-throughput data are essential. Experience with the analysis of various omics data, deploying and maintaining common bioinformatics tools (e.g. GATK, STAR) and, and familiarity with bioinformatics libraries (e.g. Bioconductor) are beneficial. The position requires initiative in problem-solving, self-direction, and excellent collaboration and communication skills. Proficiency in both spoken and written English is necessary. The applicant must hold a higher education degree in a relevant field.

  • Experience in bioinformatics support services
  • Experience in fulfilling the FAIR data principles and awareness of regulatory requirements (e.g. GDPR) for sensitive biological data
  • Familiarity with workflow management tools (e.g. Nextflow) and containerization techniques (e.g. Docker, Singularity)
  • Familiarity of monitoring and performance tuning of HPC systems
  • Experience with parallel and distributed computing
  • Experience in setting up data backup and archival
  • Understanding of RAID and scalable storage technologies
